I’ve spent most of my life wishing my voice wasn’t so wimpy. I first realized there was a problem when I was required to get up in front of the class and give a speech in high school. I didn’t sound too bad to me, but I could tell from the snickers of my classmates that something wasn’t quite right.
I asked a friend about it later that day and he told me that my voice sounded kind of girlie and was a little hard to hear and understand. I thought maybe it was just because it was still developing, like the rest of my body, and that I would eventually grow out of problem of sounding sort of feminine. But, as the years passed, not that much changed. Then I started wondering if there was anything specific I could do to fix it.
I wanted to have a voice like a drill sergeant – deep and commanding. The kind of voice people paid attention to and respected. I started looking for books in the library and for articles on the Internet and found that there are, indeed, lots of things a person can do to deepen their voice.
Here are some things I learned.
You should try to get enough sleep at night. You may have noticed how your voice takes on a deeper pitch when you first wake up in the morning. This is because the muscles in your throat that control your pitch have had a chance to rest. When the muscles are relaxed the voice is deeper. When they’re tense, the pitch goes up. It’s like a string on a musical instrument. The more you tighten it, the higher the note.
You should try to rid yourself of stress. This might be harder to do than most other things, but relieving stress will benefit more than just your voice. It will benefit your life in general. Remember, stress causes tension and tension causes increased pitch in your voice.
Learn to do some exercises specifically designed to improve voice pitch and tone. These are easy enough to find. You might try some of the things news broadcasters or stage actors do to help their voices become lower, stronger and more resonant.
Try speaking from the diaphragm. The lower in your body the voice starts, the lower it will sound coming out of your mouth.
There are lots of other things you can concentrate on to help deepen your voice, but these four are a good start and all easy to accomplish. Try them, and you should see improvement before too long.
